Lights, Camera, Action! The Story of Singapore Film

This is a really fun tour, as you can tell from the photo below taken at the Shaw Studios on a tour in 2016!

Let us give you a quick snapshot: the post war years, especially the 1950s, was Singapore's "golden age of cinema," an era dominated by two movie companies — Shaw and Cathay.

Although both these names survive in their movie theatres, only the Shaw studios still exist in Jalan Ampas — albeit as a testament to the past — while the Cathay studios have long since disappeared. We will visit the wonderful — indeed iconic — Jalan Ampas studios, which is like stepping back into another era, one where Singapore's very talented and super handsome heartthrob, P. Ramlee, reigned supreme and girls fought to catch a glimpse of him.

In recent years the movie industry here has enjoyed something of a revival with many Singaporean directors such as Jack Neo, Eric Khoo, Royston Tan, Anthony Chen and Ken Kwek releasing films to not only national, but also international, acclaim.

Our blockbuster itinerary will visit the Shaw Studios, we'll then hop on a bus and visit some sites from movies made here, while watching clips from those movies. Then, it's on to the Cathay Gallery before ending at the appealingly quirky "Projector" Movie Theatre on Beach Road for a fascinating chat about the current film scene in Singapore with someone involved in today's industry.
